In a park, she approached another mother, although she was not usually one to start a conversation. The woman’s child was good at talking, and Baek wanted to praise that ability. She said 口がうまいですね (kuchi ga umai desu ne).

The mother’s face clouded. Baek felt awkward and went home feeling down. For a while afterward, she was afraid to leave the house.

Baek recounted the experience in a March 2009 session of a Japanese-language volunteer training course. Her account is recorded in the course report prepared by the Kotoba no Kai planning committee and hosted by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs. Baek’s account, page 25

An attempt to make friends

Baek had returned to Japan when her own child was four months old. She described struggling to get out and make friends during that period. Approaching another mother in the park was an effort to find company, and the compliment was part of that attempt.

Later, as her child moved into kindergarten and other settings, Baek said she made friends. She linked those friendships to that later stage of her child’s life. The park encounter was a difficult episode within this longer account of building a social life in Japan.

What the expression adds to the compliment

At the word level, 口 (kuchi) means “mouth,” and うまい (umai) means “skillful” here. The idiom goes beyond those individual words. The Tokyo Multicultural Portal’s September 2025 language guide explains 口がうまい as using skillful or pleasing speech to get another person to do what one wants. Tokyo Multicultural Portal: expressions using 口

That description credits verbal skill but also brings in influence over another person, which can give it a critical edge. It evaluates something different from the speaking ability Baek wanted to praise. This language explanation helps show the risk of the phrase; the mother’s precise interpretation and the timing of Baek’s realization remain unknown.

<picture></picture>

Keep a compliment close to what you noticed

For a future conversation, a useful approach is to describe the particular speaking skill you appreciated.
