Japanese Miniature Culture: GASHAPON

Hello! Today, I will introduce you to a toy that's hugely popular in Japan, contained within a capsule. While these toys are formally known as "capsule toys", they are more commonly referred to by the registered trademark of the comprehensive toy manufacturer, Bandai, known as "GASHAPON" (or "GACHAPON"). Additionally, Takara Tomy, another toy manufacturer, also sells capsule toys under the name "GACHA."

What is GASHAPON?

GASHAPON machines are box-shaped devices filled with small capsules containing miniature models or figures. By inserting a coin and turning the handle, a randomly selected capsule from the machine is dispensed. With a vast range of items, from nostalgic pieces and everyday objects to famous characters, it's a joy not only for children but also for adults.

Meaning of GASHAPON

The name GACHAPON originates from the sound made when turning the machine's handle, "GASHA-GASHA", and the "PON" sound when opening the plastic capsule. GASHAPON machines can be found in many places in Japan, especially in shopping malls and game centers.

Types of GASHAPON

There is a wide variety of GASHAPON. They feature characters from anime and games, animals, food items, kitchenware, liquor bottles, furniture, and miniature musical instruments, among other items. Prices typically range from 100 yen to around 500 yen, making them an affordable source of entertainment. Usually, a GASHAPON series revolves around a single theme and includes about 6 to 10 different items, leading many to feel the urge to collect them all.

GASHAPON serves as a means to immerse oneself in Japanese culture and characters. It enjoys popularity not only among the locals but also among numerous foreign tourists. If you ever find yourself in Japan, be sure to try out the GASHAPON experience.
